OS X Freeware of the Day: Cyberduck 2.5 Free FTP/SFTP Client
Posted by: admin on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 - 06:34 AM

If the last time you used a high-quality, high-reliability FTP client that cost nothing was back in the days of Fetch 2.0 or Anarchie under Mac OS 9, this one goes out to you. Cyberduck is getting some great acclaim, and deservedly so. It is a full-featured, very high quality FTP and SFTP file transfer client that will stand up against almost any commercial product in terms of basic file transfer capability and reliability. If you need to transfer files for web development, backup, or simply file downloading, Cyberduck is likely to be a great tool for you.

If you have only the most basic needs for FTP use, you can probably get by with using Mac OS X's built-in FTP feature, which can mount an FTP server as though it were a network drive. However, most people who use FTP regularly realize that this is simply not enough for advanced work. It's simply not safe to use plain FTP for transfer of files to and from a password protected account. Thus, the SecureFTP or SFTP protocol is typically used by web developers or system admins who need access to files remotely. Similarly, FTP/TLS utilizes SSL to secure an FTP connection. For these protocols, you will need a dedicated FTP client such as Cyberduck.

In addition, Cyberduck offers the usual host of features you would expect from a solid FTP client -- bookmarking, logging, synchronization, etc. Most importantly, Cyberduck performed very solidly in our testing for stability. Finally, Cyberduck works with the popular free text editor, SubEthaEdit, to provide automatic opening and editing of remote text files for those inclined to edit live code and see how it is working. Cyberduck can also work with BBEdit, TextWrangler, and a few other text editors.
