OS X Tips: Add Text-Smoothing To Carbon Apps With Silk
Posted by: Miguel Danielson on Thursday, June 06, 2002 - 06:32 AM Topic: Software

Version 10.1.5 comes with a new text rendering engine for Carbon applications. This means that text will look smooth and anti-aliased in applications that support this rendering. Unfortunately, only a few applications currently support the rendering natively, among them the newly updated Office with Service Release 1. However, the good folks at Unsanity have released a freeware product that will allow you to take advantage of Quartz text smooth in any carbon application. The program is called "Silk" [Download 544K] and is installed as a System Preferences pane, so you can see its settings along with your other system settings. Check out Unsanity's Silk information page for details on how Silk works and what it will do for your text.

OS X Tips: Window Minimizing Effects
Posted by: Miguel Danielson on Monday, June 03, 2002 - 07:59 AM Topic: Tips and Tricks

Since the advent of OS X 10.1, you have the ability to select the "effect" by which Finder windows are moved into the dock when you minimize them. By default, OS X uses the "Gene Effect" for this function -- when you minimize a window (by pressing the yellow button in the upper left corner of a window), the window is "sucked" into the dock as though it were a genie in a bottle. The trouble with this effect, cool as it might be, is that is a real CPU killer and can slow down your system. Thus, you should consider changin your effect to "Scale," which can be done in System Preferences --> Dock. Note that you can do a slow motion minimize effect by holding the "Shift" key while you click the minimize button for a window.
